"The Five Lands" - I was really looking
forward to this.
I met Kaz there too.
First of all I had to check in and I was rooming with Anna again.
It was a great apartment with a full kitchen and a bathroom with
a bath.
Riomaggiore - and the town was gorgeous!!
Lots of lovely coloured buildings and tiny boats.
I went and met Karen at a coffee shop - it was nice to have a
good catch up.
We then got some lunch and hit the beach -
or rocks!! - by the port.
We baked and swam until it was time to get ready for dinner.
Karen had been here a few days already so she
booked us a great restuarant near the water.
I had pesto of course - Cinque Terre is where pesto originated.
Dinner was great and Karen had brought our favourite wine - Brown
Brothers Tarrango - all the way from London so we shared the bottle
down by the water front.
Then we went to the bar for a few drinks and then it was goodbye
- again!!
We thought Barcelona was it but we managed another one - this
one was a lot less emotional too.
It was a bit cloudy the next day so I caught
the train to Manarola - the second of the Five Towns.
I was staying in Riomaggiore which was the first of the Five
I found a great pizza/foccacia shop and had lunch by the water.
The town was again gorgeous!!
I walked back to Riomaggiore along Via Dell'Amore - the Walk of Love.
Then I looked around the city when I got back
- as I have said, it is a gorgeous place!!
I had a coffee and then cooked myself some dinner.
I went and watched the sunset with Kerry and
Craig who were sharing our apartment.
It was gorgeous - again!!
We got a few bottles of wine but no one had
a bottle opener so we just pushed the corks in - that was the
brain wave of Josh and Steve, two young Aussie boys who were also
in the apartment.
We made a night of it - it was great fun and we all got on very
well.
Craig, Kerry, Josh and Steve all left the next day and were gone
before me and Anna woke up - needless to say we were a little
bit slow.
They had left us notes of their email addresses which was sweet.
The new roomies had arrived.
I headed off to Monterosso, the Fifth Town.
This is the beach that has sand and is a bit resorty with its
sunbeds.
I got a sunbed and chilled out for the day.
I got the train back and cooked dinner before doing a bit of reading.
Today was Walk Day - the walk between Riomaggiore
and Monterosso was twelve kilometres along the coast and up cliffs
and is apparently very famous.
It took me about four-and-a-half hours and that was stopping to
take photos and chat and catch my breath!
The smells were amazing - lots of herby smells.
And the people I passed on the way were very friendly.
There were lots of hard-core walkers with their walking poles
and spring shoes too - I don't think it made it any easier but
they certainly looked like they knew what they were doing.
I was pretty stuffed by the time I got to the end so I took the
train back and had an easy afternoon.
I got up and walked to Corniglia, the Third Town, the next day.
On my way through yesterday I had seen a mortar and pestle that
I wanted to buy.
You make pesto in it and I was in the home of pesto!
I walked back to Manarola and had lunch by the water then walked
back to Riomaggiore and spent the afternoon at the beach with
Nicky and Liz from Busabout before another quite night.
My last full day here and I sunbaked in the morning.
I then walked up to Manarola for lunch and
then I sat at a lovely bar overlooking the water near Riomaggiore
- I wrote a list of my photos while I was sitting there.
I swam some more and baked a bit too.
It was lovely - the water is just gorgeous!!
I had dinner and then I went and watched my
last sunset - it was the best by far!!
I packed and did some journal writing.
The last morning was a lazy one - up late and then down for a
coffee before taking the train to La Spezia where the bus picks
us up.
Cinque Terre was so relaxing - the perfect
place for six nights - the longest stop on my trip.
It was a place to sleep late and take it easy - which I did!!
