Clonmacnoise

The Celtic Crosses

About 6 kilometres north of Shannon Bridge stands Clonmacnoise,
one of the most celebrated of Ireland's holy places.

Founded by St Claran in 548 A.D., the monastery rapidly developed
and later became the best known monastic centre in Ireland.

Rory O'Connor, last high king of Ireland, was buried here in 1198 A.D.

The site comprises
a cathedral,
the ruins of eight churches,
three well known sculptured crosses, and
portions of two others
