"When the government
ran out of money they needed something to tax so they decided
to tax windows
If you had more than a certain number of windows you had to pay
a tax on each one
so people would take the glass out and block them up with stone
and that is where the term "daylight robbery" came from!
Anyway a lot of them were never re-opened when the tax was dropped
because glass was very expensive
And now I guess there are heritage issues
but we did see a few stone windows and people even painted on
them
I thought it was quite funny"
