On the 11th November 2003 Her Majesty The Queen
and the Prime Minister John Howard dedicated The Australian
War Memorial at Hyde Park Corner in central London
The Memorial commemorates all those Australians who fought alongside
Britons during the First and Second World Wars and particularly
more than 101, 000 men and women who gave their lives
The Memorial features a long, curving wall of green-grey Australian
granite which was mined in Jerramungup, Western Australia
There are 540 pieces of granite, all of which were individually
shaped and finished in Australia
The Memorial is illuminated at night using an innovative lighting
system and a substantial underground plant room operates falls
of water across the wall which changes in sequence to highlight
different parts of the Memorial
The wall is set with 24,000 names of the home towns of Australian
men and women who served during the two world wars
Superimposed on these place names are 47 battle sites, representing
theatres of war where Australians served
