on March 5th at Twickenham is now just one week away and today
North coach Clive Woodward unveiled a star-studded squad to take
on Rod Macqueens South XV.
With the bulk of the recent autumn internationals going the way
of the Southern Hemisphere the match provides Clive Woodwards
men with an ideal opportunity to redress the balance.
Dr Syd Millar, IRB Chairman said, There is nothing like
a northern versus southern hemisphere match to whet the appetite
of rugby fans.
There has always been a keen rivalry between the hemispheres and
of course the match is to be played for a very worthwhile cause,
the United Nations World Food Programme, and their relief efforts
to assist communities affected by the Boxing Day Tsunami.
The match will be a fine spectacle of running rugby and in many
ways will be an intriguing precursor to this years British
& Irish Lions tour to New Zealand.
I urge all rugby fans to head to Twickenham to support the IRB
Rugby Aid match, added Dr Millar.
Irish skipper Brian ODriscoll will captain the North XV
and the squad incorporates players from all the Six Nations countries.
The starting XV for the North match will be finalised and announced
next week and further squad players may also be announced if there
should be an injuries following this weekends Six Nations
and club matches.
Clive Woodward, British & Irish Lions Head Coach and coach
for the North XV said "The guys that have been named today
are world-class and I am looking forward to working with such
an outstanding group of players.
The game promises to be a great spectacle as the North team are
a great match up for the players already named by Rod McQueen.
Both teams are fielding top quality sides and I really hope that
the rugby public and community get behind this game so that we
are playing in front of a packed out Twickenham to raise as much
money as possible for such a deserving cause, added Woodward.
The South, meanwhile, have confirmed their starting XV and announced
that Australias Toutai Kefu will replace injured New Zealander
Jerome Kaino at No.8.
South Manager, Morne du Plessis said, The South players
are very enthusiastic and serious about the match and they are
looking forward to showing off their skills at Twickenham.
I think it is tremendous that they are prepared to travel so far
and miss matches for their clubs or provinces in order to play.
Coach Rod Macqueen and assistant coach Ian Jones have received
tremendous support from national captains George Gregan, John
Smit and Tana Umaga and I encourage all southern hemisphere supporters
living in the UK to get to Twickenham to support their national
team players, added du Plessis.
The proceeds for the match will go to the IRBs humanitarian
partner, the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) to
support the vital rebuilding work being carried out in the region
devastated by the Tsunami on 26 December 2004.
