Bebelplatz

The Plaque

"We went to Bebelplatz which is where the book burning took place
The memorial to this event is excellent
You look down through a square window in the ground into a room full of empty bookshelves
It is lit up at night and is meant to look like a fire in the middle of the square
I thought it reflected the event very well"

Bebelplatz - Site of the 10th May 1933 Nazi book burning

Today a monument, designed by Micha Ullman in 1995, commemorates the event
with a translucent panel showing empty bookshelves below ground level

Nearby is a plaque bearing the poet Heinrich Heine's words from 1820

"where books are burned, in the end people will burn"
